Businesses and individuals must register on the KRA iTax Portal in order to comply with different Kenyan laws on tax obligations. The KAR iTax site requires registration before the taxpayer may file returns or pay taxes. You must register for a PIN in order to be referred to as a registered taxpayer. You must choose the tax obligation that applies to you when requesting a KRA PIN.

What is KRA PIN?

When conducting business with the Kenya Revenue Authority, other governmental organizations, and service providers, a PIN is required. Once you’ve finished the online PIN registration, the KRA PIN will be sent to you. The section below provides a full explanation of how to get a KRA iTax PIN.

Who should have a PIN?

Based on the tax obligation applicable on you, you are required to have a PIN if you are:

  • Employee
  • Business
  • If you Have rental income
  • Wish to apply for a HELB Loan
  • Want to perform a certain type of transactions listed in the first schedule of the Act.

1. Land Transactions:Title Deed registration, the Commissioner of Lands’ stamping of documents, and payment of land rates

2. County Government Transactions: Building designs must be approved, water deposits must be paid, a business permission application must be submitted, and land rent must be paid.

3. Motor Vehicle Transactions: Registration of Motor Vehicles, and licensing under the Traffic Act (Cap 403) by the Registrar of motor Vehicles.

4. Registrars of Business names and companies: Registration of Business Names and Companies by the Registrars of Business names and companies.

5. Kenya Power Transactions: Payment of Deposits for power connections at Kenya Power and Lighting Co. Ltd.

6. Trade licensing by the Ministry of Commerce.

7. Application for Value Added Tax registration.

8. Insurance Companies: Underwriting policies by Insurance Companies.

9. To facilitate importation of goods, Customs clearing and forwarding at the offices of Commissioner of Customs and Excise.

10. To facilitate all contracts for supply of goods and services to all Government Ministries and Public bodies.

Documents required for iTax PIN Registration

A company applying for New PIN registration

The following are documents required to be submitted by a company applying for new PIN registration:

  • Copy of Certificate of Incorporation
  • Copy of CR12(a legal document listing shareholders or directors of the company)
  • Copy of Memorandum and Article of Association (optional)
  • Copy of PIN Certificate for one of the company’s directors
  • Copy of Tax Compliance certificate of one of the company’s directors
  • Copy of the Acknowledgement Receipt

Partnership firm applying for New PIN registration

The following are documents required to be submitted by a partnership firm applying for New PIN registration:

  • Copy of the Acknowledgement Receipt
  • PIN Certificate for one of the partners
  • Deed of the partnership (optional)
  • Tax Compliance certificate of the partners (optional)

  3. Select “Non-Individual” and “Online Form” as your mode of registration.
  4. Fill in your basic information.
  5. Select suitable tax obligation by checking the relevant boxes.
  6. Enter details of company directors or partners.
  7. Fill in agent details if you have one.
  8. Enter result of the arithmetic sum provided and submit.
